Me Before You

-Review-

Hello lovelies.

Well this is finally getting posted!

Here is my first book review on the blog. I promise with these reviews to either avoid any spoilers or at least give fair warning of them, go in depth about the story line (more than the blurbs) and give you my honest and critical thoughts.

I’m so excited to do this review. I’ve read so many myself and now its my turn to have my say.

So let’s start with  ‘Me Before You’ by Jojo Moyes.

This novel introduces us to the main character and narrator-Louisa Clark. A 26 year old going no where in life who suddenly lands a job she never imagined after becoming unemployed.

The job is essentially acting as a companion to a man named Will Traynor who is a quadriplegic. As you can predict this is a romantic story but that’s all I’ll say for now.

Here’s my first problem with the book. It’s quite predictable. Sure from the blurb you can tell she will have her life ‘turned upside down, have a major epiphany and of course fall in love- but a sort of forbidden love’. Typical easy read rom-com read.

My next issue is the the context of the characters circumstances. I mean seriously Jojo Moyes. You decided to write about a 26 year old no where near ready to walk down the aisle with no degree and basically living her life through her boyfriend before letting her be controlled by another whom she falls in love with but can’t have a future with. This man being the one who pushed her to step out of her comfort zone, use her brain and actually look at her life and all the possibilities it contains.

I don’t necessarily love the idea of allowing someone to make you happy or to tell you what to do with your life etc… but I can get past it if I feel that this person makes you a better you, and Will Traynor did just that for Louisa.

The other problem though is that he couldn’t stick around,he couldn’t reciprocate the feelings, not truly. It’s like she’s a dog, he put the lead on her but didn’t take her for a walk. (weirdest reference i know but stick with me here!)

This book was good. But just that…good, not great, not inspiring not a spectacular profound change your life read. It wasn’t a complex read. It was written well though. I appreciated getting inside Lou’s mind and getting to know the characters from her point of view.

I can’t completely shut it down though. I did skim through it quickly and I did laugh at parts. This is a heartwarming story-line, and for that I would still recommend others to give it a read. There were moments where Lou was sassy and I loved it! This is where the character really shined, in my opinion and Moyes’ skillful writing showed.

I’ll even admit I teared up at the end, well not quite the ending but rather the epilogue. I won’t say much more hear just that if you’ve read the book you’ll understand what I mean here.

Despite my critic I was looking forward to see what comes next for Lou in ‘After You’. I’ll be doing a review on this novel too, it’s only fitting right?! And actually I loved this book, so much more than the first so keep your eyes out for that!

With all that said I give this book a solid 3 stars ***

Until next time!

A lady of literature.

“Reading is dreaming with open eyes”

So this weekend I have had a revelation of sorts. I stumbled upon booktube. For those that aren’t aware there are a multitude of youtube accounts created by booklovers dedicated to sharing their opinions and recommendations on the literary works they have read. And it’s quite magical.

I can’t believe I never knew about all of these videos. I honestly feel like an idiot for never looking up a review to a book I had read or intended to read before now.

This is definitely a place I want to be a part of.

Tea is amazing Think about it. China, some of the best inventors; The Brits, some of the best authors. It could be the reason. Well whether it is or isn't don't forget to take time out for it. Tea ... Tea Time: janeaustenrunsmylife.wordpress.com:

If you don’t know I am an English student. I am a lover of books and thoroughly enjoy the experience of delving into a new world on the comfort of my couch with a cup of tea.

Since finding booktube and also joining Goodreads (How and I mean HOW did I not sign up to this app sooner?!) I have a looooong list of books that I’m more than eager to read.

So I’ve decided that today I’m going to share with you the list of books I intend to read in the next few months. This is just the start though,  the list will surely continue to grow!

1.After You by Jojo Moyes  (I’ve already read Me before you earlier this summer)

2.Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill

3. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

4.  We don’t know what we’re doing by Thomas Morris

5. A little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

6. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

7. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

8.Ctrl Alt Delete by Emma

9. It’s kind of a funny story by Ned Vizzini

10.The Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

I plan on doing reviews on all of these books as soon as I finish them. I really want to introduce these type of opinion posts to the blog as well as film reviews.

If you want to follow me along with my reading then you can check out my Goodreads account at gurlthinking.

Happy Reading!

Summer Time

Hello lovelies.

So my last post, while I found it good to do a more intense real life type post I thought I would do a more chill down time snappy read one today.

But if you did like what you read first all thank you! And second of all there’s definitely more to come.

So here’s the things that make up a great summers day for me…

In no particular order leeego… 🙂

1. Good Reading Material

So for some reason I do most of my book/novel reading in the summer time.

I just find it so relaxing to take a break from my phone and fall into another world. Focus more on the characters problems than my own 😄

These are a few books on my summer reading list:

2. The Playlist🎶🎶

Very very important. What is summer without the tunes that turn  our days into movie scenes.

Spotify is my go to for music. There’s so much to choose from. Now I am a cheapskate so I have to deal with the ads and a limited number of skips. But besides this barely tolerable factor I like using the app.

This playlist is a working progress but I’ll suggest it here anyways. A for effort 😄

Now this one isn’t mine but there’s a good variety of club summer like tunes here. ☀️
And who doesn’t love a bit of throwback to the old favourites.

*For more see my Spotify @gurlthinking. Also some playlists are collaborative so feel free to add to them!

3.The shades.

Sunglasses are my favourite accessory, along with chokers. And when the sun breaks through the sky you have to have the perfect pair so as not to let down your cute ass outfit, consisting of white de-stressed shorts, basic tee and maybe even a kimono.  These are some of my faves, ones I own and some you can buy online.

These are from Charlotte Russe

Primark/Penneys

Unfortunately I don’t have links to these but below are two sunnies I have my eyes on!

4. Hurr

I’m very lazy when it comes to my hair. I don’t like doing too much with it or putting too much product on it. I like to have it very natural looking. A new fave of mine is sea salt spray. This emphasises the waves my hair already has, but giving it more volume and a soft feel and textured look.

I use the Tony and Guy Casual Sea Salt Spray. It’s a 75ml bottle that I have-perfect for travelling. It lasts me a while too because I don’t use that much at a time. I use this after I’ve washed my hair while it’s still damp, it doesn’t work with dry-trust me! 🙂

So that’s all I think of for now. I thought this would be a fun post to share what I love during the summer.

For the guys…

Hello Lovelies!

So in my last post I shared some ideas that I had for buying gifts for your sisters and friends. Today I thought I’d do a similar post but with gift ideas for the men in your lives. I have two brothers and I know that it is hard to know what to get them especially when I actually ask them and they reply with ‘whatever’. Yes very helpful I know, so I searched all over the internet and here’s what I found.

So my brother Jack has this thing about clothes where he wears them as soon as he buys them or gets something as a gift. Which is why on christmas day he leaves it to one of us in the family to essentially sort out what he’ll wear by giving him a shirt or jacket as a present. If you think this is like your brother too then check out these clothes below.

As I said in my last post I always think it’s nice to give someone a book for christmas. It may seem like an intimidating job going into a bookshop and being welcomed by hundreds of books and having the task of choosing one. But have no fear because I’m going to try and simplify and de-stress this experience for you. The first thing to consider is what kind of a person they are and what hobbies they have. My dad like photography, my eldest brother is obsessed with cars and my other brother is currently studying an art and design course. Think of those type of things and then you have a category of books to look at and from there you just choose whichever one fits your budget and seems the most appealing 🙂 Here a few options!

Alrighty dolls I think that’s all I’ve got to share for now. Tomorrow I’m continuing my christmas shopping, my aim is to have it all completely sorted by the end of the week. I hope this helps and gives you some inspiration. Amazon is great for books and tech stuff. ALways check to see if there are discount codes available to use at the checkout. Most importantly take note of the dates for final shipping before christmas. The last thing you want is to order something that won’t arrive until after the holidays.

Bye for now

Santa’s coming to town!

Hello Lovelies!

I think we can all agree that this is one of the best times of the year. However, it can also be one of the most stressful! This week I finished my exams and I can now start getting my christmas shopping organised. As I went on my merry way around the shops first getting ideas I started to think about the gift guides that we see everywhere and I don’t know about ye but I don’t any of them particularly helpful, they’re usually not in my price range or the gift ideas don’t suit anyone I know. So here’s my gift guide, a very reasonable price range and really nice things!

I thought I’d divide this into two posts a his and hers if you like, and ladies first! 🙂

Ok so this is definitely on my xmas wishlist! I’ve swatched the colours and they’re all fab! This is a great pressie because the shades are perfect for day to night wear and its really value for money. I priced this palette in Cara pharmacy for €15 BARGAIN! 🙂 I love the matte browns and that gorge black for a cool smoky eye effect. Now this is just my personal opinion because I definitely don’t claim to be a makeup expert, I’m definitely what you call amateur! 😀

Alright so I always think jewellery is a really nice gift to receive because there’s something so personal about it. One of my favourite pieces this year have been my two Alex and Ani bracelets. The entire collection is so simple and pretty and very special too because there’s nothing quite like them. This is one of the bracelets I have and its called the path of life II bangle in russian gold. I love that the gold is sort of rustic. This bangle costs €36 in the Kilkenny shop. If you’d like to buy a more personal bangle they also do ones with birthstones too and the bangles also come in silver! Here’s the link to check this bangle on the official Kilkenny page~  http://www.kilkennyshop.com/brands/alex-and-ani/alex-and-ani-path-of-life-ii-gold.html

Ok so I have had an obsession with bags for as long as I can remember, at one point I had over 50 and that was around my early teens. I go through different stages of wanting a big tote style to a mini, at the moment I’m using a tote but how cute is this mini black winged tote from River Island! They have some of the nicest purses and bags and they’re all generally reasonable enough. This bag in particular is priced at €45. A very lovely pressie for the bestie or sis! Link: http://eu.riverisland.com/women/bags–purses/shopper–tote-bags/black-mini-zip-winged-tote-handbag-678306

And to go along with the River Island purse loving, I had to include this here because I love the metallic pastel colours! The back and interior is black so it’ll still match the bag while also adding a pop of colour to the duo! This purse costs €22 and River Island purses are known to be durable and spacious so this really is a good deal! 🙂 Link: http://eu.riverisland.com/women/bags–purses/purses/grey-metallic-patchwork-purse-675923

I really think you can never go wrong by giving someone a book for christmas. It doesn’t have to be a novel or serious classic, it can just be book on a topic they’re interested in. Books by celebrities is always a safe bet. Millie Mackintosh has released a book called Made and I was definitely excited when I was given this for my birthday! Millie is one of my style icons and this book provides with a little view into how she dresses as well as other things in her life. I found this book for £8 (can’t get a € price :/ ) on amazon. The best thing about online shopping is that its shipped right to your door so you can skip the mayhem of the shops and long queues! Black Check Strap Watch | New Look

Oh dear god I fell in love with this watch the moment I saw that monochrome strap! How fricken cool is this guys! My taste in watches is simplicity. I like either plain black or brown straps and a plain watch face. I’m not really into big gold fancy and glitzy watches. If you’re like me or your friend is then this watch is perfection! The black and white strap adds a little something yet the entire watch remains classic and pretty! New look I have noticed are doing some lovely watches. This one in particular is such a steal at €14.99 😀

Rose Gold Bracelet Watch | New LookAnother watch but a different style is this rose gold one, also from New look. Rose gold is so stunning on everyone and a very popular trend this year! This watch is more dainty and girlier than the above. I think this would make a lovely dressy watch (one to wear going out/special occasions) because of its bracelet style. Only just a bit more money yet still very reasonable at €22.99

Other ideas that can never go wrong are spa vouchers! These are perfect for all our hard-working mothers. To go along with this could be a voucher for your sister or godmother or aunt or whoever you like to get their nails done. If you wanted to get your parents a joint gift then definitely a voucher for a restaurant is sweet! Don’t be afraid to give someone a voucher thinking its not personal enough-because depending on the voucher it actually still can be a thoughtful pressie!

When buying gifts I think it’s important to try and stay relaxed about it and not stress too much because after all it’s christmas- the time for cheer! Organisation is key here! Before I actually go shopping I go out and roam through the shops and get ideas and take down lists of things I see that I think someone would like. I also pay attention to the not so subtle hints that are dropped around the lead up to xmas- mom this is definitely directed at you! 😀 Try to pick gifts that show some thought like a book someone has always wanted to read or a charm for a bracelet.

Alrighty dolls I think I’ll finish up here, I have a few more gift ideas that I definitely want to share so check back to see when the post is uploaded. 🙂

Happy Shopping and Merry Christmas!

xo Georgia 🙂
