Fees are still scarier than clowns

Hello lovelies!

Recently I had a right of passage experience as a college student. I attended my first protest/march…. and it was pretty amazing!

Over the summer an evaluation of third level education took place and a report was drawn up- The Cassells report. I’ll try and keep the details brief just so you understand the context of this post.

The report essentially suggests three methods of funding third level education in the future in Ireland. The first option is to continue with the current method. Fees are 5,000€ but students only fund a total of 3,500€. I say only but this is still a large sum of money for a lot of people. There are also grants available but as it stands this grant system known as SUSI is flawed and quite difficult to avail of.

The second option would be publicly funded education. This would be the best option because it would remove the financial strain on students and their families. It would mean that people will not be unable to attend college because they cannot afford to go.But this seems to be more of a dream than an achievable reality.

And the final option that would cause great damage to the education system in Ireland and would greatly affect Irish society negatively is to implement a student loan scheme. Students would be required to pay for their entire fees with no government levy. These fees would start at 5,000€ and there would no longer be any form of grants available.

Maybe you can see now why this issue is so important to me. It is my issue not just because I am a student but because I have a responsibility as an Irish citizen for future generations who will want to receive a third level education without being faced with debt at the end of this period.

How can the government think its realistic to expect students to come out of college and be able to cope with an estimated debt of 20,000€ (average debt level for most 4 year degrees)?!

I’m a passionate person who loves a debate-as I’ve mentioned before- so the opportunity to go up to Dublin with the Students’ Union in my college was something I couldn’t miss out on.

Taking over the streets of Dublin, Yelling out and demanding to be heard, actually taking a stand on something I believe was an unreal experience- excuse the corny here.

College is a time in your life to try new things and feel like you’re waking up and doing something with your life. This is what I’ve heard from so many people when I first started college but it’s really only now in my second year that I feel this.

Guess this is definitely something to tick off my bucket list: Attend a protest-CHECK

While I may have had to take the day off work and skip the library study sesh it was totally worth it. Despite getting to stomp around Dublin for the day, I had such a laugh with the gang that was there.

Maybe this seems like a really pointless and boring post but I wanted to bring more attention to this campaign even to my tiny corner of the internet.

If you’re a student in Ireland and want to know more here’s the link to the USI (Union of Students Ireland) page: http://usi.ie/education/national-youth-council-of-ireland-equate-and-inmo-back-usis-national-demo-in-favour-of-publicly-funded-3rd-level-education/

Until next time

Blogging.

Hello Lovelies.

Happy Sunday. I’m feeling creative today so I really wanted to get the laptop out and get typing.

I had this conversation earlier with my brother about blogging. He made the comment that blogging has become almost annoying as today, everyone and their mother call themselves bloggers.

This is something that put me off blogging for ages, and still sometimes does as I am reluctant to tell anyone that I have a blog.

You see I never like doing what everyone is doing. I like to do my own thing, be my own person in so many ways.

But I really like the idea of blogging. I love bloggers who pour their hearts out to their online readers. I love the opportunity of connecting with others across the world whom I have shared interests. I love that it’s a place where you can literally do/write anything.

The thing I don’t like is the way blogging is perceived. It’s not exactly a respected hobby/profession.

I’ve also found it hard to even figure out what I want to do with my blog. I’m not really sure which genre it follows or what type of things I want to talk about. To me my blog is still new and I’m still figuring out how this all works.

I know I want to bring content that causes people to think more about something and chat about something new. I’d love to build a great discussion in the comments section. I know I’ve uploaded posts about “the ideal summer” or “DIY Facial scrub” or even a couple shopping posts, but looking at them now I know they aren’t things I want to share here.

So sorry if you enjoyed them, there won’t really be any more.

What I imagine my blog to be is like a magazine. Full of articles regarding different topics, basically human interest pieces and real news.

I really don’t know how long I’ll last here, maybe I’ll keep going for years and maybe this will be the last post. (But probably not though) 🙂

I really want to be a sort of Carrie Bradshaw type. I just want to type out a post as the thoughts come to my mind. Real life pondering from an 18 y/o Irish girl. Honesty and definitely realism.

I don’t care about the stats or the idea of making this into a business. I’m just here to speak my mind and explore my passion for writing.

Now that we’re into the second half of the year I’m going to consider this a fresh start for my blog. Expect the same but I suppose a little different also 🙂

Get to know me

Hello Lovelies.

So the very brilliant UK blogger Frankie a.k.a frankiefancies has nominated me to the Liebster award. Frankie posts about health, beauty, food and the things that go on in her life. I’ll leave a link below so please go check her out and share some love with a like or comment on her posts! x

new

So for today’s post I’m going to be answering some fun personal questions so you can get a better idea of who I am 🙂

Let’s get started!

What are the top 3 things on your bucketlist?

  1. Before I turn 30 I would like to write and publish a novel.
  2. To live in New York
  3. To create a podcast

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

Lena Dunham. This is a more recent inspiration but when I read this question she was the first person who popped into my head. I love it when women make things happen for themselves. Independence is something very important to me. I don’t like relying on other people. I firmly believe that if you want something you need to make it happen for yourself and you have to make yourself happy, not to rely on others for happiness. Lena has done so much that inspires me. She’s written and published a novel. She is the creator of the hot U.S show ‘Girls’ and a podcast called ‘Women of the hour’ in which she interviews different influential female friends and relatives of her.

Dunham has also played an active role in the modern feminist movement. She pushes the idea not that women are better than men but that we are just as good as them (equality my friends not superiority). I would love to meet her. She’s such an intelligent funny human and if I could have anyone at a dinner party for example she would definitely be top of the list. I can only hope to achieve half of her success  by the time I’m 30 🙂

Why did you start blogging and what is your favourite thing about it?

As I said I love blogging because of the social aspect to it.To the outside world it can on the surface seem like a very lonely hobby but you and I both know this not to be true. I get such a kick when I see people commenting on my posts and chatting with you. I enjoy meeting people all over the world and sharing thoughts and interests.

I started this blog because I was in college with no job and I was quite lonely and fed up. I felt like I didn’t really have many people to talk to or anything to really do. So I thought hey I love writing why not share the many thoughts and opinions I have. And here we are 6 months later. I may not have many posts but I’m definitely proud of my little part of the internet, I’m definitely not going anywhere just yet so stay tuned for more!

What’s the weirdest thing about you?

I’m a bit of a germaphobe. I don’t share drinks with anyone not even family. I don’t share food off plates. I hate public toilets. I always carry sanitiser. I HATE burps and farts so no I do not do either of those and hate it when I’m around people and they do either.

and yes my family and friends do think I’m nutty. 😀

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time?

Pinterest! I could scroll for hours searching outfit inspo and Diy’s.

What is your dream career?

A writer either for a magazine or a novelist.

What annoys you?

People who have no manners. Yes I know I sound like such a granny 😀 But seriously I like people to be polite with good etiquette.

What are your short-term goals?

To dedicate myself more to developing my blog, posting more. Hopefully I’ll set up a facebook and snapchat soon also.  I’ve recently gained weight and become quite unfit so by the end of the summer I would really like to get healthy again 😀 And most importantly, get my drivers license!

Some weekend motivation from Karma Athletics! time to sweat off the stress of the week!:

What are your long-term goals?

To come out of college with a 2.1 or 1.1 degree. To move out into my own place. To travel to the west coast of America, I’ve seen the east coast so now I wanna see the other side. I also want to go to Iceland, Italy, India, gosh so many more. To volunteer overseas. To intern at a magazine or newspaper.

so cute! I wanna make this for my room/home...inspire by this picture and PLNU's study abroad sign.:

If you could be anyone else for a day who would you be?

Anna Wintour. I’m a fashion lover. I want to know what’s like to be such an influential figure in the industry and be the editor of a hugely successful fashion magazine, well more like THE fashion magazine.

Who makes you happiest.

While I do always say you create your own happiness, there is one person that whenever I’m usually not in a bad mood for too long. That would be my cousin, Kate. There is only 11 months between us and we have been very close since we were tiny. We always seem to have a good ole laugh about something.

And that concludes the questions. I’ve probably gone into more detail than was necessary and rambled a bit but sure that’s typical me! 🙂

Thank you so much to Frankiefancies for the nomination!

It was definitely fun but also a little hard to do. You’d think it’d be easy to answer these but some definitely required some thought.

And my nominees are…drumroll please……..

  • Sophie Samantha blog
  • Rachel holly blog
  • Cliona Hill blog
  • Tu es Belle blog

Each of these ladies have very impressive and stunning blogs so definitely go and check them out, links below!

And here are my questions for them. 🙂

  • What was the idea behind your blog’s name?
  • What 5 people would you invite to a dinner party, dead or alive?
  • What is your favourite item of clothing?
  • Who inspires you and why?
  • What is something embarrassing that you have done or has happened to you?

  • Three words that best describe your personality/life?

Thanks so much again to Frankie for nominating me. I think this is a really fun way to get to know more bloggers, share the love around by helping each other out promoting one another’s blogs and also to allow our readers to get to know us better.

Happy Reading!
